Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism
The Knights of Columbus are Catholic gentlemen committed to the advancement of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism, and defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was on these bedrock principles that the Order was founded over a century ago and remains true to them today. Throughout every ministry of St. Michael the Archangel you’ll find Brother Knights working to fulfill the central mission of the Order: striving in charitable works; serving the Church and unified in following its teachings; supporting brother Knights in their temporal and spiritual needs; acting for the good of their country; and giving aid to widows, orphans, the sick and the poor. This is Father McGivney’s dream, echoing across the century, and living today in the hearts of his brothers and all of those they touch
As Catholic gentlemen, we, the Knights of Columbus, are committed to serving our families. This is not only part of what we do; it is part of who we are. To that end, we sponsor programs that cater to strengthening family and marital values by holding numerous family focused events such as:
- Wives Appreciation Night
- Pancake Breakfast
- Council Picnic
- Pot Luck Dinners/ Movie Night
- Breakfast with Santa
- Soccer Challenge
- Free Throw Contest
- Seniors Luncheons
- Ray Bernard Mardi Gras Party
We also acknowledge and reward exceptional families in our parish with our ‘Family of the Month’ award. This award is given to a family within our parish whose work with our community is representative of genuine Christian stewardship.
As the Order has grown, its benevolence has multiplied. The Order continues to break all previous records for charitable contributions and volunteer service. In the past decade, the Knights raised and donated nearly $1 billion to numerous charitable causes and contributed nearly 400 million hours of volunteer service. On average, the Knights now donate $140 million and 63 million hours of volunteer service annually to charitable causes.
Council 11768 alone has collected over $250,000 for local charities over the past 10 years. We are called upon to support our church, its priests, our local community and persons in need. In 2006 the Georgia State Council bestowed our Council with the ‘Community Service Award’ for our Car Wash event where we raised over $28,000 benefiting Breast Cancer. In addition, over the last several years we received several awards for our Disability Drive campaign.
These and other fundraising activities have benefited local organizations such as:
- American Red Cross Blood Drives
- Cherokee Day Care Training Ctr.
- MUST Ministries
- Hope Center
- MERIMOS Ministries
- Special Olympics
At the Church’s request, our Council built a Memorial to the Unborn, a two-year project, which was completed in late 2006.
Father McGivney’s founding vision for the Order also included establishing a life insurance program to provide for the widows and orphans of deceased members. The Order’s insurance program has expanded substantially to serve more effectively the Knights’ growing membership. Year after year, the Knights of Columbus has earned the highest possible quality ratings for financial soundness from A.M. Best and Standard & Poor’s. The Order provides the highest quality insurance and annuity products to its members, along with many other fraternal benefits such as:
- Member /Spouse Fraternal Benefit (Free)
- Family Fraternal Benefit (Life Insurance)
- Long Term Care
- Orphan Fraternal Benefit
- Scholarship & Student Loans
